Destination Race event in Kelowna, BC

On September 7th, 2013 Canada welcomes its first Destination Race event in Kelowna, BC.  The Kelowna Wine ½ Marathon brings together two of the finer things in life: a first class running event and a celebration of wine.  Offering a combination of stunning scenery, culinary delights and award winning wines, the Wine ½ Marathon is as much about running as it is about celebrating the personal successes of each runner.

The one-way course begins in the benchland orchards of Southeast Kelowna and meanders past wineries, golf course and estate farms, providing layered views of the Okanagan’s arid landscape, the Monashee mountain range and the majestic Lake Okanagan.  At the junction between the country and city – which serves as the relay transition point – a 180 degree sweeping lake view unveils a snapshot of the final 7 miles of the race; a race which eventually winds its way down the winery-dotted hillside to the popular tree-lined pathway along Mission Creek Greenway.  Final miles of the course pass into the downtown via the Abbott Street corridor; a popular urban pathway passing by Kelowna’s heritage district, neighbourhood parks and mature gardens.  This is a race where you might want to run with your camera!

Although you will want to savour your run experience, the finish line offers a celebration complete with a wine festival, food, music, friends and family.  Culminating at Waterfront Park situated on the shores of Lake Okanagan, your friends and family are invited to join you at the post-race festival featuring the area’s best wine and culinary treats.

While in Kelowna, you are invited to explore Kelowna, a perennially popular vacation destination, with twenty-five wineries, miles of white-sand beaches and clean cool waters of Lake Okanagan, framed by majestic mountains.  Scheduled after the traditional summer tourist rush, September is known for its pleasant mornings, sunny afternoons and warm evenings.  What a great way to extend your summer holidays – and all you need to do is get training and signed up!  For more information and to sign-up, please go to www.destinationraces.com.
